Town Hall Meeting on Jobs and the Economy

Everyone is concerned about unemployment, jobs and the need to move our country ahead. People are searching for a vision for the future that includes full employment and a fair and just economy.

At the height of the depression President Franklin Delano Roosevelt refused to accept a permanent army of unemployed, and he pledged to “arrange our national economy to end our present unemployment as soon as we can.”

Come to hear the ideas from our President’s Jobs Act, labor, research, and faith leaders on moving ahead; and add your own ideas in a Town Hall Meeting on Jobs and the Economy.

When: Thursday, October 13 @7pm

Where: Midtown Scholar Book Store, 1302 N 3rd Street, Harrisburg

What: A town hall meeting on jobs and the economy with speakers from Organizing for America, AFL-CIO, Keystone Research Center, and Concerned Faith-Based Leaders.

End Of An Era – Chair McDermott Resigns

Gail McDermott, who has served as Chair of the Cumberland County Democratic Committee for 13 years has resigned her post, effective August 1, 2011. During her tenure McDermott worked tirelessly in an effort to bring effective government to Cumberland County and to uphold the basic values and principles of the Democratic Party. She helped strengthen the party at the grass roots level and helped turn out the vote in crucial state and national elections.

McDermott said, “It has been an honor to have served as Chair and to have worked with many great Democratic candidates and volunteers who care about their communities and their neighbors.”

Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell said, “Gail McDermott’s leadership in Cumberland County motivated and turned out more Democrats than ever in one of the most Republican counties in the Commonwealth. Her tireless hard work narrowed the vote gap and helped lead the Democratic ticket to many statewide victories over the last decade – including my own. I have always been proud to have Gail on my team, but, even prouder to call her my friend.”

T.J. Rooney, the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party from 2003 to 2010, worked closely with McDermott through the years. He said, “No one worked as tirelessly or demonstrated a stronger commitment to the Democratic Party than my good friend Gail McDermott. For over 10 years, she led the Democratic Party of Cumberland County through great progress and growth. I’m proud to have served with her through my tenure as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.”

John Alosi, the CCDC Vice Chair, will serve as interim Chair. McDermott said, “The Party will be well served by John Alosi who understands the needs of the party and candidates.”

We’re Building The Party; Lend A Hand

Several local Democratic volunteers working with Organizing For America (OFA) have planned a full slate of activities this summer to help build the Party in Cumberland County while preparing for the 2012 election.  While laying the foundation for next year, their efforts will benefit County Commissioner candidates Jim Hertzler and Sean Shultz, Common Pleas Judge candidate Elizabeth Stone, as well as local candidates now by engaging our base during what some people mistakenly consider an off-year election cycle.

Details are provided below for each of the activities.  Even if you only have one or two hours to donate, please give freely.

Our Team For Cumberland County

Jim Hertzler

Hertzler

Congratulations to Democrats Jim Hertzler and Sean Shultz on their win in Tuesday’s Primary.  Jim and Sean will represent the Democratic Party in the General Election after a vigorous campaign against Michael Fedor.

Also, kudos to Elizabeth Stone for her fine showing in the Democratic Primary for County Court of Common Pleas Judge.  Elizabeth, or Lisa to her many friends, will appear on the fall ballot by merit of her second place finish Tuesday.

Sean Shultz

Shultz

Much work lies ahead for Jim, Sean and Lisa as they prepare to take their positive message to the voters of Cumberland County.  While local Democrats gave their time, expertise and donations generously to earn these Primary wins, it’s time to double those efforts to capture the Courthouse for the first time since Nelson Punt and Jacob Myers were elected in 1972 and to place a woman on the county bench.
